UPDATE: Gunn has shot down another casting claim, saying Jensen Ackles has not been cast in the DCU.
James Gunn has answered the Matthew Lillard Flash question, and the answer is one word.
“hi is this true that Matthew is playing The Flash?” a fan asked Gunn on Threads on September 30.
Gunn’s reply: “No.”
The answer racked up 884 likes within an hour of posting.
Where The Flash Theory Came From
The speculation took off this week after the Atlanta set account AtlantaDCFans posted new details on Lillard’s Man of Tomorrow character: a biracial family, two children between the ages of 7 and 11, and scenes with Jimmy Olsen, Cat Grant and Perry White.
Fans read that as Barry Allen, married to Iris West-Allen with twins Don and Dawn, the Tornado Twins from the comics.
CBN ran down the theory alongside the rumor that Viola Davis is returning as Amanda Waller in the sequel.
Gunn has been swatting Flash rumors for months. He laughed off the Grant Gustin return claim in September with “Please define ‘decent rumor'”, and there is still no Flash movie or series on the DC Studios slate.
So Who Is Lillard Playing?
Gunn said no to The Flash. He said nothing about the rest.
The family details, the Daily Planet scenes, and the Waller rumor all went unaddressed.
Lillard’s role has been kept secret since he joined the movie in May, and his history with Gunn goes back to the Scooby-Doo movies, which Gunn wrote and Lillard starred in as Shaggy.
What stands is the picture my sources have described: Man of Tomorrow filling up with cameo deals, Adria Arjona playing Wonder Woman, and a Batman plan that amounted to one scene.
Lillard is still playing somebody. Gunn just took one name off the list.
Man of Tomorrow hits theaters on July 9, 2027. Everything we know about the movie is here.
