James Gunn posted a video from the Man of Tomorrow set Monday: a lighter built like a Green Lantern power battery, glowing green, captioned “It’s easy being green. #ManofTomorrow”
Look closer at the flame and the lighter.
It’s a middle finger, and it says “From Guy.”
That’s Guy Gardner’s signature move — the giant middle-finger construct Nathan Fillion’s Lantern threw up in Superman — and Gunn just used it to tease Gardner’s presence in the sequel.
The Hollywood Reporter reported back in April that Fillion would reprise the role. Consider this Gunn’s confirmation, delivered exactly the way Guy Gardner would deliver it.
Count the Roster
This “Superman sequel” now has Superman, Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, and Brainiac — plus Supergirl, Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl, the Engineer, Rick Flag Sr., Adria Arjona, a Matthew Lillard mystery role, and now TWO Green Lanterns, with Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart also on the call sheet.
Oh, and those Batman leaks.
Exactly as I reported in Monday’s bombshell: what was originally a Superman sequel is now a mini-Justice League “Gang” movie, with Gunn bolting on DC characters as a reaction to the Supergirl backlash.
The Echo Nobody Else Will Tell You About
Here’s the part worth remembering: the scrapped McQuarrie-Cavill Man of Steel 2 — the movie Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy had on the board before Gunn torched the slate — featured Brainiac AND Green Lantern.
Gunn’s “Frankensteined” script, as my sources described it, is rebuilding the movie that already existed.
Funny timing, too: Gunn teasing Green Lantern the very week WBD’s “content protection” squad is carpet-bombing this site with DMCA takedowns over Lanterns coverage.
Apparently Green Lantern teases are fine, as long as they come from the studio.
