UPDATE 9/1: Wall Street bought the answer, as Newzoo now estimates $4.5 billion in sales by launch week and the leaker who called the game “not ready at all” reportedly cashed out roughly $270,000 in crypto hours before the show started.
Rockstar’s answer to ten days of leaks arrived Thursday at 3 p.m. ET: 26 minutes of GTA 6, every second of it captured on a base PlayStation 5.
Twenty-four hours earlier, the leaker holding a copy of the game called it “not ready at all.”
Rockstar’s own statement, posted the same morning, chose “nearly there!” for a title less than three months from launch.
Then the studio put Jason and Lucia on Netflix for nearly half an hour, and the press previews that published alongside the show say Rockstar North’s co-studio head has already played the game start to finish.

The Extended Look was only half of Thursday’s drop. Select outlets and creators were flown to Rockstar North last month, and their previews went live once the Netflix event did.
Per the Times, Rob Nelson’s most recent playthrough of GTA 6 ran roughly 80 hours, covering the full campaign plus some optional objectives that feed back into the story.
The Times also notes when that playthrough happened: February 2026.
Six months ago, the man running the studio sat down and played this game from the first mission to the credits. A game that runs 80 hours front to back in February is not a game that is “not ready at all” in August.

The studio told the Times the full map is three times the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2.
Nelson gave YouTuber TGG the rest of the math: twice the size of GTA 5‘s map, with Vice City alone twice the size of Los Santos, and Vice City plus its suburbs 11 times the size of Los Santos and its surroundings.
The Times also puts the animation count at well over 600,000, against roughly 55,000 in GTA 5 and 300,000 in RDR2.
The campaign is split into chapters the way RDR2‘s was, and Nelson told the Times he hopes some players will spend a morning making coffee, showering, and heading out for exercise before they commit a single crime.
What The 26 Minutes Showed
The show opened straight into gameplay: Jason leading Lucia into an apartment block to collect a package for a character named Boobie, a pickup that goes wrong and turns into a cover shootout.
On the way in, Jason pets a dog and an angel icon pops up, the morality system the leaked clips pointed to, now on screen with Rockstar’s name on it.
From there it was the leak footage’s greatest hits, made official. The six-star wanted level is back.
Police track three things separately, your face, your clothes, and your car, with an icon for each, and clearing any one of them lowers the heat. Jason opens a parked car with a slim jim instead of smashing the window.
The couple mechanics from Wednesday’s Dazed interviews got their first real demonstration.
Raul, the character fans have been waiting to see in motion, gets picked up mid-chase with the cops behind them, Jason jumps into the back seat to fire out the window while Lucia takes the wheel, and the player swaps to her for the getaway. When the chase ends, the crew torches the escape car and switches to a van, and the wanted stars stay up.

Lucia ends the show losing a fistfight and winning it back with a quick-time prompt and the heel of her shoe. In between: a base jump off a Vice City tower into a parachute, scuba diving, jet skis, fanboats through the swamp, and an actual race track.
The moment that answers the readiness question best is the smallest one.
The player switches from Lucia, mid-air, to Jason inside a building across the city, and the camera makes the whole trip in a couple of seconds. Per Netflix’s own listing, that is a base PS5 doing it.
What Rockstar Didn’t Say
Not a word about the leaks.
The 26 minutes played as if the past ten days never happened, which, after Wednesday’s apology letter, is the response Rockstar chose: no mention of Cyberleek, no mention of the subpoenas, just the game.
No PC version. No GTA Online. No official map number from Rockstar itself, only the figures its developers handed the press.
And two claims out of the creator previews that Rockstar has not confirmed. Content creator Davy Jones says the base PS5 build runs at 30 frames per second, and first-person mode reportedly won’t be in at launch.
Netflix, for its part, buckled minutes before the premiere as outage reports crossed 3,000, then recovered.
Strauss Zelnick called this event an hors d’oeuvre three weeks ago, with a main course and dessert still to come before November 19. Rockstar said Wednesday it knows it needs to exceed expectations. On Thursday it showed the game.
