Greg Capullo just lit up Batman fandom with a single cropped photo of pencils, and Scott Snyder made sure everyone noticed.
On Wednesday, Capullo posted an extreme close-up of a rough sketch in progress, captioned with nothing but horns and a pencil emoji.
Within minutes, Snyder quote-tweeted it with the eyes emoji. That’s the whole tease. No caption, no title, no reveal.
Fans immediately went where you’d expect. One early reply summed up the reaction: “Absolute batman guest art :0”
So is the legendary New 52 Batman artist finally coming to the best-selling comic in the industry?
The Tease
The image itself gives away almost nothing by design. It’s a tight crop of loose pencils, with what could be a caped or winged figure and heavy radiating lines. That’s it. Capullo still does cover work for Spawn and Marvel alongside DC, so the art alone doesn’t tell you the publisher.
What ties it to DC is Snyder. The Absolute Batman writer quote-tweeting his old partner’s mystery pencils with the eyes emoji is not an accident. Snyder knows exactly what that signal does, and he sent it anyway.
And yes, it does look a lot like Batman.
What’s Actually On The Record
This tease didn’t come out of nowhere.
Back in February, when a fan asked about Capullo guesting on Absolute Batman, the artist shot it down, saying he’s done more than his fair share of Batman.
He later confirmed he turned down Snyder’s offer outright. Snyder’s public response was that the invitation would always stay on the table.
Then came MegaCon in March, where the story shifted.
As we covered from the Snyder and Capullo panel, Snyder laid out the Absolute Batman roadmap for the rest of the year.
What also emerged from that panel, per Popverse‘s reporting: Capullo has quietly retired from drawing comic interiors, Snyder’s first call to draw the Court of Owls guest arc was Capullo, and when Snyder pushed for him to do variant covers on the book, Capullo told the crowd, “I don’t mind still doing some covers.”
Capullo also questioned if his style fit with Absolute Batman.
A Variant Cover?
Put the pieces together, and Capullo could be doing a variant cover for Absolute Batman.
The Court of Owls, the villains Snyder and Capullo created together in 2011, just re-entered the Absolute Universe. Snyder has said Capullo was his first choice for that material. And the writer has been hyping the NYCC-timed Absolute Batman #24 and #25 as the biggest issues of the year, exactly the kind of moment DC loads up with heavyweight variant artists.
A Capullo Owls cover on the book’s biggest issues would be the cleanest possible marketing play for a series that has already carried DC past Marvel, topped six million copies sold, and turned a single variant into the $1,500 DropGate frenzy.
If DropGate proved anything, it’s that an Absolute Batman variant with heat behind it prints money. A Capullo variant would have more heat than any of them.
Capullo Drawing Interiors?
The guest-art dream, meaning Capullo drawing actual pages, runs headfirst into everything the artist has said this year. He turned down the interior offer in February and reiterated at MegaCon that he isn’t looking to draw new pages.
A full reversal four months later isn’t impossible, and to be honest, that drawing looks more like an interior than a cover.
The other possibility worth keeping honest: this might not be Batman at all. Capullo teased something symbiote-related for Marvel earlier this year, and Spawn remains in his rotation. Snyder’s eyes emoji is the only thread connecting the sketch to DC.
Meanwhile, the Absolute Batman brand keeps expanding beyond the page. The animated series with Snyder as showrunner was just confirmed at Annecy, and San Diego Comic-Con is weeks away. If DC is sitting on a Capullo variant announcement, SDCC is exactly where it lands.
