The first reactions to Godzilla Minus Zero are in, and Takashi Yamazaki has another monster on his hands.
The sequel to the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One screened for press at the New York Film Festival ahead of tonight’s world premiere, and critics are comparing it to Terminator 2, The Dark Knight, and The Godfather Part II.
Godzilla Minus Zero also makes history as the first R-rated Godzilla movie. The MPA rated the film R this week for “some violent content/bloody images,” a first for the franchise going back to 1954.
The movie opens in theaters on November 6, three days after its release in Japan.

“Toho should win another Oscar”
Anthony Orlando says Godzilla Minus Zero joins Terminator 2 and The Dark Knight as “one of the greatest sequels ever made.”
JoBlo calls it “the Godfather Part 2 to Godzilla Minus One’s Godfather” and says Toho should win another Oscar for the film, with a Best Picture nomination deserved.
The rating gets a thumbs up as well. “That R rating is legit,” writes Eric Francisco, who calls the sequel another masterpiece from Yamazaki.
Critics also admit the movie made them cry.
Edward Douglas says he was “completely blown away.” Amy Kim says the film “reduced me to a sobbing mess.” Brandon Lewis writes that he never thought he would cry at a Godzilla movie.
Marissa Hill recommends seeing it in IMAX or Dolby and warns fans to bring earplugs, because the King of the Monsters has never sounded this big.
