Marvel Studios previously released a statement confirming Glenn Close as Nova Prime for the James Gunn-directed Guardians of the Galaxy movie, and now for the first time we hear from the six-time Academy Award nominated actress about the role.

Speaking with MSNBC’s Chris Matthew, Glenn Close talks about working on independent movies with a movie like Guardians enabling her to continue to do them.

“In August, I am going to go off and do the next generation of Marvel Comic Disney, and I get to be the chief police of the galaxy,” she said. “I’m doing that because it will then afford me to up and go do the other kinds of movies that I really love, and hopefully I will have a great time. It will be a new experience for me.”

Nova Prime, in the Marvel Comics, is the leader of the Nova Corps who are empowered by the Nova Force which is generated by the Living Computers of the planet Xandar. The Nova Force gives the Corps enhanced powers such as super-strength, super-speed and flight, and invulnerability in addition to being data-connected to the “World Mind.”

The Nova Corps at times serve as a galactic police force with the worlds they have treaties with.

Regarding the possible character Glenn Close could be playing in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, there was a female alien Nova Prime (pictured below) in the popular comic book event Annihilation; however, the character didn’t stick around too long, lasting literally a couple pages as the forces of the Negative Zone wiped her and all but one of the Nova Corps members out. Richard Rider survived and went on to become Nova Prime defeating the forces of Annihilus and his Annihilation Wave with other characters that would go on to form the Guardians of the Galaxy.
