Geoff Johns is heading to the Extreme Universe.
The Ghost Machine co-founder announced he’s writing a Chapel one-shot with Rob Liefeld handling the art, revealed Monday on Robservations with Rob Liefeld.
Chapel, the Youngblood antihero Liefeld created for 1992’s Youngblood #1, is infamous in early Spawn lore as the man who killed Al Simmons.

“I’m writing a Chapel story, which I’m super excited for,” Johns said. “I’ve loved Youngblood since I first read it. Huge fan of you, Rob, obviously, since Hawk and Dove… I’m going to be writing a Chapel one-shot, and Mr. Rob Liefeld’s drawing it.”
“I am illustrating the whole thing,” Liefeld confirmed, adding the two hatched the project at San Diego Comic-Con and that “now people listening to this will know.”
It’s still early: Liefeld said Johns hasn’t sent him anything yet, and that he plans to start layouts on his end-of-summer vacation. No publisher, format, or release date was announced.
Johns’ Youngblood fandom goes way back
Johns also revealed his first comic script ever was a Youngblood story, a short Photon tale he wrote at around 22 while working as Richard Donner’s assistant.
“I read it the other day. It’s not very good,” Johns admitted.
Liefeld remembered Johns handing him a Xerox of it in the early 2000s, with the caveat that he couldn’t use it. Two decades later, he’s getting the real thing.
Johns, who says he owns two signed Hawk and Dove trades and the Youngblood hardcover, has been busy with Liefeld’s old Image cohort lately through Ghost Machine, where his Redcoat series with Bryan Hitch has a feature film in development at Charles Roven’s Atlas Entertainment.
Johns and Liefeld also talk about the new Lanterns show. And Johns his time working at DC and Warner Bros. led to his new Red Coat movie currently in development.
