DC’s biggest problem coming out of the Supergirl disaster isn’t the write-down. It’s the question underneath the entire slate: who is going to make these movies?
Word around town, per our Hollywood insiders, is that filmmakers are hesitant to take on big DC franchises. And that hesitancy has only hardened since Supergirl bombed, for two reasons our insiders spell out.
We Reported The DCU Director Problem Back In October
First, the timestamp. This isn’t post-flop pile-on.
Back in October, our insiders told us DCU films were stalling because filmmakers were rejecting Gunn’s control, with directors walking rather than working under him.
That reporting came from the same round of sourcing that told us Gunn would be out once the WBD sale goes through.
Eight months later, the trades landed in the same place.
THR’s Supergirl post-mortem quotes a franchise filmmaker, not involved with the movie, who calls the studio’s test-cut fight not normal and notes that a studio putting money into competing test cuts feels strongly about certain things.
That’s a working franchise director telling a trade, anonymously, that what happened on Supergirl isn’t how this is supposed to work.
Reason One: Gillespie Got The Studio’s Cut And Still Wore The Bomb
The first new reason our insiders cite is that Craig Gillespie is being thrown under the bus for Supergirl.
Consider what directors just watched happen in public.
Per THR, the studio took Gillespie’s movie over in post, brought in Gunn’s writer and Gunn’s editor, forced a bakeoff, and shipped its own cut over a version of his that tested better on songs, pacing, and the villain.
Then the movie bombed, and the think pieces asked whether Gillespie was right for the take.
He directed I, Tonya and Cruella. He took the assignment, lost control of the edit, and got handed the failure. Every filmmaker with an agent watched that happen. That’s the cautionary tale doing the rounds.
Reason Two: Fans Are Auditing The Homework Now
The second reason is newer, and it’s about the audience.
Per our insiders, fans are now scrutinizing filmmakers for their dedication to a project, and catching them when they don’t know the source material they claim to understand.
Gillespie is again the example. He claimed in interviews that Ruthye kills Krem in the Woman of Tomorrow comic. She doesn’t, and Rolling Stone had to correct him in print, citing Tom King himself.
The clip made the rounds. The correction made the rounds. A director’s homework is now publicly audited, and failing the audit follows the movie forever.
That changes the job. Signing a comic book franchise used to mean inheriting a fanbase. Now it means walking into an examination, and the fans grade harder than the studio does.
The DC Slate Shows The Damage
Look at DC’s board and the hesitancy stops being abstract.
The Brave and the Bold has sat since 2023 with no casting and no date. TheWrap reports the new priority, a Bane and Deathstroke movie, has no director and no cast attached. Wonder Woman is, per its own writer, still so early it has none of the above.
Projects don’t stall like that when directors are lining up.
And this is the pool David Ellison inherits when the Paramount deal closes and the regime changes.
A studio is only as strong as the filmmakers willing to take its calls. Right now, per our insiders, the phone isn’t ringing the way DC needs it to, and Supergirl just gave every director in town two more reasons not to pick up.
