‘The Exorcist: Martyrs’ Plot Leaks: Scarlett Johansson Faces John Leguizamo’s Satanic Serial Killer

UPDATE: The leaked plot follows The Exorcist III formula, and Mike Flanagan has said the 1990 film is a major inspiration.

Plot and character details have leaked for The Exorcist: Martyrs, Mike Flanagan’s reboot starring Scarlett Johansson, courtesy of scooper Daniel Richtman.

The cast has been known for months.

Now we know who everybody is playing, including John Leguizamo as a satanic serial killer called “Father Sunday.”

A Cop, a Serial Killer, and a Possessed Son

Per Richtman, the film follows a single-mother cop who, 13 years after taking down a notorious satanic serial killer, investigates a new series of murders connected to her past, all while her 12-year-old son becomes the target of a terrifying demonic force.

Back in December, when the title first leaked, Johansson was described as a detective pulled into a case of “inconceivable darkness,” and we asked whether her son would be the one who gets possessed this time.

Now we have the answer: yes.

Father Sunday, Two Priests, and Grandma Diane Lane

Here’s the character breakdown, per Richtman:

Scarlett Johansson plays the police detective and single mother.

John Leguizamo plays Father Sunday, the infamous satanic serial killer she took down 13 years earlier. Whether Father Sunday is an actual fallen priest or just goes by the name isn’t said.

Chiwetel Ejiofor plays a priest connected to the investigation. Earlier reports described his character as an ex-con turned priest.

Laurence Fishburne plays the priest who performs the exorcism.

Diane Lane plays the mother of Johansson’s character, who helps look after her grandson.

The boy, named Max, is the 12-year-old who becomes possessed. Richtman doesn’t attach an actor, but Hamnet star Jacobi Jupe was previously reported as playing Johansson’s son.

None of the roles have been confirmed by Universal.

The Exorcist: Martyrs Opens March 12, 2027

Flanagan writes and directs The Exorcist: Martyrs for Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, Morgan Creek, and Universal, with the film a clean break from The Exorcist: Believer and its canceled sequel, Deceiver.

The movie shot in New York and wrapped in June, and Flanagan filled out the cast with his regulars: Carla Gugino, Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, Samantha Sloyan, Hamish Linklater, and Carl Lumbly, plus Sasha Calle, John Gallagher Jr., and Gil Bellows.

The Exorcist: Martyrs opens in theaters on March 12, 2027.
