At the recent New York Comic Con, we caught up with writers Patrick Melton, Marcus Dunstan and Stephen Romano, and conducted a lengthy interview on their recently-released supernatural horror thriller novel, Black Light.
Melton and Dunstan — writers from the Saw franchise, the Feast series of movies, The Collector and soon to be released Piranha 3DD — alongside writer Stephen Romano, paired with Mulholland Books to pen Black Light.
Speaking with Cosmic Book News, they informed us that Black Light will be adapted into film with Mike De Luca (Social Network, Money Ball) on as a producer. A director is currently being sought, with Melton, Dunstan and Romano doing the screenplay as well.
With the news now official, we thought we would share some of what they had to say.
“The great thing about De Luca is that he is not just a legendary producer, but he is also a writer. He wrote [John] Carpenter’s In The Mouth Of Madness and the last Freddy movie before they rebooted it,” Romano said. “That’s great. He was the first guy we wanted to work with.”
They also stated they would like the film adaptation of Black Light to fit within the popular PG-13 rating.
“At the same time, whenever you can cloak it in the supernatural, I think there is a way to break fingers, tackle ghosts, ingest, regurge — whatever you have to do, but keep it within that PG-13 net that has grown quite violent in its own right,” Dunstan said.
The novel Black Light sees Buck Carlsbad, part-private eye, part-exorcist, on the ride for his life as his unique gifts bring him back full circle to the place he swore he would never return, a place that almost cost Buck his life, and a place known for the most deadly paranormal events in history.
