Ewan McGregor is out promoting The End of Oak Street, and the actor is using every stop on the press tour to pitch his return as Obi-Wan Kenobi.
This week alone he made the case twice.
And now he says he wants to spend the rest of his career playing the Jedi Master.
Ewan McGregor Is Waiting On Disney
Asked by E! News if he’s ready to step back into that world following his recent comments that a decade of untold Obi-Wan story remains, McGregor made it clear the holdup isn’t on his end.
“Like, I’m ready. I’m ready whenever they are,” he said. “They just seem to not be ready. I don’t know why, but I’m up for it.”
McGregor recapped the Obi-Wan Kenobi finale, which saw the Jedi leave young Luke with Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru before riding off with Qui-Gon Jinn’s Force ghost.
“The next time we find Obi-Wan Kenobi, he’s Alec Guinness in the cave up in the mountains. ‘Hello there.’ That bit,” he said. “And what happens between those two moments is what I want to do.”
Then came the line Lucasfilm should frame and hang on the wall.
“And spend the rest of my career doing these stories. You know, series or movies,” McGregor continued. “I’ve got ten years before I’m Alec Guinness’ age. So come on, Disney.”
“There’s Got To Be A Great Story Or Two, Or Three, Or Four”
The clip arrives as McGregor also talked Obi-Wan on Friday at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, where he appeared ahead of a Trainspotting 30th anniversary celebration (via The Hollywood Reporter).
Asked there if he will play the Jedi again, McGregor didn’t hesitate. “I hope so! I really would like to do it again.”
“There’s got to be a great story or two, or three, or four, or five,” he added. “Maybe a series or movies.”
Eight Days Ago It Was “Nothing’s Really Moving”
The double dose of campaigning comes just over a week after McGregor admitted Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 is going nowhere, telling Anne Hathaway that “nothing’s really moving on that front” before appealing directly to Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro.
The pattern is unmistakable at this point. McGregor teased Season 2 back in October 2024, the project was rumored to be moving forward in June 2025, and then came word that Ahsoka Season 2 features no Obi-Wan.
Nearly two years of signals and Lucasfilm still hasn’t pulled the trigger. So McGregor keeps campaigning, press stop after press stop.
The kicker is that Obi-Wan Kenobi delivered the most-watched Disney+ original series premiere ever at the time of its 2022 debut, while Disney just admitted The Mandalorian and Grogu flopped at the box office.
The studio has a leading man begging to return to one of the few Star Wars properties with proven demand. Over to you, Josh. Again.
Update, August 21: Luminate’s mid-year data offers a possible answer to McGregor’s “I don’t know why.” Obi-Wan Kenobi did not make the Top 10 Disney+ original series for the first half of 2026, finishing behind The Book of Boba Fett, Loki and The Bad Batch. The 2022 premiere demand was real. The rewatching never followed.
The Prequels Were “Dragged Through The Mud”
McGregor also got candid in Edinburgh about the backlash years, saying he “learned a lot about not giving a shit” after the prequels were “dragged through the mud.”
The fan hate kept him off the convention circuit for years. “I never went to the conventions. Because I think I felt like people didn’t like them, and that’s okay.”
That changed at the Obi-Wan Kenobi premiere in 2022, when thousands of fans erupted for the first two episodes. “I felt this rush. I had never heard that noise.”
McGregor admitted he spent the prequels “trying really hard” to “be a young Alec Guinness,” and said the role came much easier on the series once he was closer to Guinness’ actual age.
As For James Bond
The Edinburgh crowd also asked about 007, and McGregor admitted his name never comes up. “I might just have missed that boat.”
He figures the producers will want somebody younger, but said he would have liked a crack at that world.
For now, McGregor is in theaters with The End of Oak Street, which debuted at 85% on Rotten Tomatoes and beat every Jurassic sequel ever made.
