UPDATE: A new Avengers: Doomsday test screening reportedly scored higher than Endgame, with the runtime holding at around 2 hours and 45 minutes.
Disney’s own press release confirms Avengers: Endgame Encore is bringing more than one Avengers: Doomsday preview to theaters.
Every Encore presentation includes new footage tied to Doomsday, giving audiences an exclusive look at the December 18 release.
Then there is a second piece. Fans seeing Endgame Encore on IMAX and Infinity Vision-certified screens get an additional Doomsday sneak peek on top of it.
So What Are The Extra Four Minutes?
The runtime listings put Endgame Encore at 3 hours and 5 minutes compared to the 2019 cut’s 3 hours and 1 minute.
Disney’s latest wording gives us a much better idea of what those extra four minutes probably are.
At CineEurope, Disney described the Encore package as a custom introduction, additional new footage, and a special end tag.
Put that next to this week’s press release and it sounds less like Marvel went back and inserted new scenes throughout Endgame and more like the new material bookends the movie: something up front, something at the end, and the Doomsday footage attached around it.
Joe Russo has described the material as a bridge between the two films, which fits. What this increasingly does not sound like is a new cut of the 2019 movie.
Steve Rogers remains the obvious candidate for that bridge.
Endgame leaves him going back in time to live a life with Peggy Carter before returning as an old man. That unresolved history gives Marvel a direct path from the ending of Endgame into a movie built around the multiverse coming apart.
Rumor Puts Two More Doomsday Trailers On The Calendar
Now comes the rumored schedule for what happens next.
An account on X claims Marvel will release a second Avengers: Doomsday trailer at the end of October, followed by the final trailer at the end of November.
The account also points out that Marvel has released a new Doomsday preview every month since July.
That schedule is unconfirmed, but the cadence matches what Disney has actually been doing. The release calendar also gives Marvel plenty of reason to keep doing it.
Marvel Has A December Fight Coming
Avengers: Doomsday opens December 18 directly against Dune: Part Three, which has already locked up the IMAX screens Marvel would normally expect for an Avengers movie.
That is the context for the IMAX-only preview. Marvel has the premium screens in September and Warner Bros. has them in December, so the extra Doomsday look riding on Encore is the studio getting its movie in front of the IMAX crowd while it still can.
If the rumored schedule is right, a final trailer at the end of November would give Marvel its last major marketing push roughly three weeks before release, right as Warner Bros. is making its own final push for Dune.
And that’s what makes the monthly rollout since July more interesting. Marvel isn’t dropping one trailer and disappearing for three months. It’s finding a new reason to put Doomsday back in front of audiences every month heading into a December box office fight it can’t afford to lose.
Avengers: Endgame Encore tickets are on sale now ahead of the September 25 release. Fans have also spotted a full color regrade in the trailer, while a rumor claims Cassie Lang’s scene was reshot with Kathryn Newton.
