Avengers: Endgame Encore‘s overseas pre-sales opened ahead of James Gunn’s Superman and The Fantastic Four: First Steps in several international markets, per box office analyst Jatinder Singh.
That matches the start the re-release posted at home, where Encore put up the biggest first-day pre-sales this century for a re-release within hours of the August 25 on-sale, passing Titanic 3D, per Global Box Office.
“Strong pre-sales for #AvengersEndgameEncore overseas as well. Like DOM, the start exceeded CBM titles like Fantastic Four and Superman in several markets,” Singh posted Thursday.
“The crucial market of China will go on sale soon. Things could be interesting taking on Avatar wise,” he added.
The Two Movies It’s Outselling Struggled Overseas
These aren’t catalog titles. They’re the two “big” superhero movies of summer 2025, and both came up short internationally.
Gunn’s Superman finished with $264.5 million overseas, 42.7% of its $618.7 million worldwide total. The Fantastic Four: First Steps did $246.4 million international out of $520.6 million.
Now a seven-year-old movie anyone can stream on Disney+ tonight is opening ahead of both in several overseas markets.
And China hasn’t even gone on sale yet.
We covered this exact problem days ago: Man of Tomorrow needs the international audience Zack Snyder built for DC, because Gunn keeps losing it.
The overseas audience for superhero movies is out there buying tickets. A 2019 Avengers re-release out-pre-selling Gunn’s Superman abroad makes the point again.

China Settled Endgame vs. Avatar Once Before
Then there’s the market that isn’t open yet.
China was Endgame‘s biggest international territory in 2019 at $629.1 million. Singh notes Chinese pre-sales start soon.
That’s where the record talk lives. Endgame sits at $2.799 billion worldwide. Avatar holds No. 1 at $2.923 billion. That’s the roughly $124 million gap we called a big ask when tickets went on sale.
And China has decided this race before. Endgame took the record from Avatar in 2019. Avatar took it back in March 2021 with a China-only re-release that added about $57 million.
If Encore makes a run at the top spot, it runs through China, the same road Avatar used.
The trailer doing 77 million views in a day was the first sign the record chatter wasn’t pure fan math. Overseas pre-sales beating brand-new tentpoles is the second.
Domestically, the stakes are already set. Spider-Man: Brand New Day passed Endgame at $858.4 million to take the No. 2 all-time spot, and Encore‘s gross is Endgame‘s only way back.
An audience lining up worldwide to rewatch a 2019 movie is not an audience with superhero fatigue.
Avengers: Endgame Encore tickets are on sale now ahead of the September 25 release, and every showing carries a Doomsday preview, with a second one locked to IMAX and Infinity Vision. Avengers: Doomsday follows December 18.
