Warner Bros. and Legendary have released a new trailer for Dune: Part Three, and along with confirming the December 18 release date, the marketing plants its flag exactly where it hurts Marvel the most: “Only in theaters and IMAX.”
That’s the same December 18 when Avengers: Doomsday opens, without the IMAX brand behind it.
The trailer is built around Paul Atreides’ line, “Forgive me for all I’ve done,” picking up nearly two decades after Paul seized control of the Imperium.
Now a ruthless Emperor haunted by visions of Imperial collapse — and the reappearance of his long-lost love — Paul gets pulled into a sweeping conspiracy with Chani at the heart of it as rebellion brews.
This is Dune Messiah territory, and Denis Villeneuve looks to be closing out the trilogy exactly as dark as the book demands.

Dune: Part Three Has The IMAX Screens Locked Up
The “Filmed for IMAX” branding is right there in the official announcement, and it’s not a throwaway hashtag.
As we previously reported, IMAX has locked Dune: Part Three into an exclusive three-week run through the holiday corridor, which leaves Avengers: Doomsday, opening the exact same day, shut out of IMAX.
Disney’s answer is Infinity Vision, the in-house premium large format certification it announced at CinemaCon. That rollout starts with Avengers: Endgame Encore on September 25, which adds new Doomsday footage, before Doomsday itself in December.
IMAX isn’t pretending to be worried. CFO Natasha Fernandes called Infinity Vision “a marketing play to try and offset the fact that they don’t have an Imax platform or brand for Avengers: Doomsday,” while touting IMAX as “the undisputed leader in premium cinema worldwide.”
It’s the same squeeze that kept Spider-Man: Brand New Day out of IMAX this month thanks to The Odyssey. In 2026, the IMAX calendar is the story, and Villeneuve owns the December page.
December 18 Is Now The Box Office Showdown Of The Year
Disney could have moved Doomsday up a week to grab IMAX screens on the front end, but the Infinity Vision rollout makes clear that isn’t happening. Both movies hit December 18, and neither side is blinking.
The stakes cut both ways. Dune: Part Two did $714 million worldwide and was an IMAX event. Villeneuve shoots for the format, and audiences pay up for it. Doomsday is Marvel’s biggest swing since Endgame, with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom carrying the weight of the studio’s rebound.
But the telling part is the choice IMAX already made: handed a holiday window with the Avengers on one side and Villeneuve on the other, the premium cinema brand bet on the filmmaker, not the franchise.
Now Marvel fans get to decide whether “Infinity Vision” on a marquee actually means anything — or whether the only logo that moves premium tickets this December is the one attached to Dune.

Hans Zimmer returns to score, while Oscar winner Linus Sandgren (La La Land) takes over cinematography from Greig Fraser.
Dune: Part Three opens in theaters and IMAX across North America on December 18, 2026, with the international rollout beginning December 16. Legendary East handles China.
