Dune: Part Three: Release Date, Cast, Tickets, Trailer & Everything We Know

UPDATE Aug. 19: The awards talk has started four months early. A source tells us Robert Pattinson is “in top form and a strong early Oscar favorite” as Scytale. It lands as AMC CEO Adam Aron apologized for Tuesday’s ticketing meltdown, revealing Dune: Part Three traffic ran roughly triple what the chain saw at the Spider-Man: Brand New Day launch, with only premium formats even on sale.

UPDATE Aug. 18: The widest wave of presales yet went live, and the ticketing infrastructure did not survive the hour. IMAX 70mm, digital IMAX, Dolby and the rest of the premium tier opened Tuesday morning: AMC’s app buckled, Fandango’s queue ran past an hour, scalpers hit eBay by lunch, and a new 33-second spot dropped alongside it all.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three brings his epic trilogy to its conclusion on December 18, 2026, and it arrives as the biggest theatrical event left on the calendar: an exclusive IMAX run locked up through the holidays, presales crashing ticketing apps four months out, and a head-to-head opening against Avengers: Doomsday. Dune: Part Three Release Date

Dune: Part Three opens only in theaters and IMAX across North America on December 18, 2026, with the international rollout beginning December 16. Warner Bros. Pictures distributes worldwide, and Legendary East handles China.

IMAX has locked the film into an exclusive three-week run through the holiday corridor, the same play that handed The Odyssey the format all summer. That leaves Avengers: Doomsday, which opens the exact same day, shut out of IMAX entirely (more on that below).

Fans who signed up at dunemovie.com/insider get in early. Dune Insider screenings start December 14 in IMAX 70mm only, expand to digital IMAX on December 15, and open to the remaining premium large formats on December 17, putting word of mouth in motion four days ahead of the wide release.

Dune: Part Three Tickets

Premium format tickets are on sale now, and every wave so far has turned into a bloodsport.

The first batch of IMAX 70mm opening-weekend tickets went up in July 2025, roughly 17 months before release. A second wave in April 2026 sold out all 19 locations it covered, with resale listings pushing $1,000.

The third and widest wave opened August 18: more IMAX 70mm, plus Dolby Cinema and the rest of the premium large format tier selling for the first time. AMC’s app crashed on launch, Fandango’s digital queue ran past an hour, and IMAX 70mm seats hit eBay at $200 apiece within hours. AMC CEO Adam Aron publicly apologized for the meltdown, revealing ticketing traffic ran roughly triple what the chain saw when Spider-Man: Brand New Day went on sale, and that was with only premium formats available.

The IMAX 70mm footprint is tiny by design: 36 locations worldwide per IMAX’s own listings (25 in the United States, nine in Canada, one each in the U.K. and Australia), with more international sites expected. TheWrap reports theatrical sources describe dozens of 70mm sellouts already on the books for opening weekend, with demand supporting round-the-clock showtimes through Christmas and beyond.

General admission tickets for standard screens are not on sale yet. That wave comes closer to release.

Dune: Part Three Story

Dune: Part Three adapts Frank Herbert’s Dune Messiah and is set nearly two decades after Paul Atreides seized control of the Imperium. Per the official synopsis, Paul is now a ruthless Emperor facing the consequences of his reign: old allies return, terrifying new threats emerge, and betrayal lurks in every shadow. Haunted by visions of Imperial collapse and the reappearance of his long-lost love, Paul is drawn into a sweeping conspiracy with Chani at the heart of its unfolding mystery. As rebellion brews and enemies close in, he must confront the true cost of power and the fate of those he loves the most.

The title skips the Messiah subtitle, and the casting hints at why: newcomers Nakoa-Wolf Momoa and Ida Brooke play Leto II and Ghanima, Paul and Chani’s twins, characters from Children of Dune, the third book. Villeneuve has said the first two films form a complete adaptation of the original novel, and he has called this one the most emotional of the trilogy.

Villeneuve directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Brian K. Vaughan. Yes, that Brian K. Vaughan, the comic book writer behind Y: The Last Man, Saga, and Ex Machina.

Behind the camera, Oscar winner Linus Sandgren (La La Land) takes over cinematography from Greig Fraser, with Oscar winners Patrice Vermette (production design), Joe Walker (editing), and Hans Zimmer (score) all returning, alongside costume designer Jacqueline West and casting director Francine Maisler. Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Villeneuve, Tanya Lapointe, and Joe Caracciolo produce.

Production began in July 2025 in Budapest, with Chalamet spotted sporting a shaved head for Paul’s transformation as Emperor. Filming wrapped ahead of Robert Pattinson moving on to The Batman: Part II.

Scytale is a shape-shifting Face Dancer from the secretive Tleilaxu, the master infiltrator at the center of the conspiracy against Paul in Dune Messiah. THR first reported Pattinson was circling the villain role in April 2025, and the trailer confirmed him as Scytale: bleached hair, pale, a face that will not sit still. Pattinson said at the trailer launch that you cannot tell whose side the character is on, and that is what makes him interesting.

The performance is already generating awards chatter. A source tells us Pattinson is “in top form and a strong early Oscar favorite” for the role. Treat that as an insider claim rather than a studio statement, but the structure of the race supports it: Dune and Dune: Part Two won eight Academy Awards between them, every single one technical, with zero acting nominations across two films.

The same source has since gone further, telling us the studio views Pattinson as the next Tom Cruise.

The Doomsday Showdown

December 18 is the box office showdown of the year. Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday open the same day, and neither side blinked.

IMAX bet on the filmmaker over the franchise. The premium brand committed its screens to Dune for an exclusive three-week run, leaving Doomsday without the IMAX banner. Disney’s answer is Infinity Vision, its in-house premium certification, which IMAX’s CFO dismissed as “a marketing play” while touting IMAX as the undisputed leader in premium cinema.

The squeeze is already showing up in ticketing. When Doomsday presales launched in July, theaters were holding premium screens back for Dune: Part Three, and the December math has since become a real screen capacity problem for Marvel’s $400 million opening hype. On the other side of the ledger, Spider-Man: Brand New Day set the all-time opening record without IMAX this summer, proving the format is optional for a four-quadrant juggernaut. Both films are selling: Doomsday presales topped $35 million with 17 weeks to go, while Dune crashed AMC on premium formats alone.

Dune: Part Three Trailers

Warner Bros. has been rationing footage since day one, and every drop has been engineered to move tickets. It started March 16 when Timothée Chalamet revealed the first look on Instagram, followed by the first trailer, images, and posters on March 17. At CinemaCon in April, the first seven minutes blew the room away: a brutal Stilgar-led war sequence in a lightning storm that had attendees comparing it to Saving Private Ryan in space, plus Hayt telling Paul he is “way beyond redemption.”

The most recent full trailer arrived July 8, built around Paul’s line “Forgive me for all I’ve done” and planting the “Only in theaters and IMAX” flag directly opposite Doomsday. A 33-second spot followed with the August ticket on-sale under the tagline “Secure your path, seal your fate.”
