The David Jonsson casting wasn’t the result of a massive search. There was never a search at all.
Kevin Feige revealed the real story to Empire following Saturday’s Hall H announcement that Jonsson is the new Black Panther, and it turns out Marvel has been sitting on the secret for roughly half a year.
The Secret Meeting
Per Feige, Marvel hadn’t even begun casting. Ryan Coogler was buried in Sinners, and the plan was to wait until after the film’s Academy Awards campaign wrapped before sitting down to start the Black Panther 3 process.
Coogler didn’t wait. About a month and a half before that sit-down was supposed to happen, he called Feige to say he’d found his Black Panther, named Jonsson, and told Feige he was going to meet him. Feige describes a secret meeting under cloak of darkness at a hotel, after which Coogler called back, saying he felt it in his soul: “He’s a good man, and he is the next Black Panther.”
Feige says he got chills, welled up, and greenlit it on the spot. Marvel has kept the secret for five to six months since.
What The Timeline Tells You
Do the math and Jonsson was locked around the start of 2026, in the middle of Coogler’s Sinners awards run, months before Saturday’s reveal. Every casting search rumor from that window was chasing a decision that had already been made. No shortlist, no audition process, no studio deliberation: Coogler hand-picked his Black Panther off the run of work that made Jonsson one of the most acclaimed young actors going, met him in person, and called it done.
The framing matters too. Empire’s Chris Hewitt, who has interviewed Jonsson over the years, points to an innate decency in the actor that echoes what everyone always said about Chadwick Boseman. Coogler leading with “he’s a good man” before anything about talent says the director was casting for exactly that.
It also explains why Feige gave the Black Panther 3 reveal pride of place at the panel, positioning it as the night’s emotional peak over even the Doomsday footage. This wasn’t an announcement Marvel rushed. It’s one they protected for half a year.
