Dave Bautista In Talks to Play Kratos in Amazon’s God of War — And Atreus Is Getting Recast Too

The internet cast Dave Bautista as Kratos four years ago. Amazon is finally catching up.

Deadline reports Bautista is in negotiations to take over the lead in Prime Video’s God of War series, replacing Ryan Hurst, who tore a bicep performing a stunt in late June, roughly four months into filming. The injury required surgery, and the recovery timeline was more than the production could absorb.

Filming shut down immediately after the incident, with the decision to recast coming a couple of weeks later. Prep is expected to begin in mid-August, with cameras back up in mid-October in Vancouver.

Per Variety, waiting on Hurst would have pushed the show’s return all the way to 2027, and Amazon declined to comment on the casting. The deal isn’t closed yet.

The two-season, back-to-back production plan remains intact, though the four episodes already completed with Hurst will reportedly be reshot with the new Kratos.

The Fan Cast Finally Wins

Bautista has been the internet’s Kratos since the series was announced back in December 2022. When ComicBook.com floated him for the role on Instagram, Bautista himself jumped into the comments: “According to popular opinion, there’s everyone else.”

Even Marvel got in on it, having Drax mistaken for the god of war in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. About the only holdout was game Kratos himself, Christopher Judge, who joked at the time, “…and it’s been said I can’t read a room.”

The pick is also practical. The former WWE champion can step into a physically brutal role with almost no prep window, and he conveniently just finished bulking up to shoot the new Highlander movie.

This Is Also About That First Look

Hurst’s injury is the official reason for the change, and it’s a genuinely rough exit. Nobody wants to lose a role like this to a torn bicep on a stunt.

But it’s impossible to ignore what Amazon gets out of the reset. The February first-look image of Hurst and Callum Vinson was hammered online, with God of War creator David Jaffe trashing the shot and Hurst pushing back on Instagram.

Deadline itself points out that Bautista’s casting suggests a different approach to the character following months of discourse over that image. Translation: the do-over isn’t just about a bicep.

Atreus Is Getting Recast, Too

Here’s the part the trades aren’t covering.

A casting call spotted by MP1st (via VGC) is seeking actors aged 14 to 17 for characters codenamed “Joshua” and “Ruth,” with descriptions matching Atreus and Thrud, the roles played in Season 1 by Vinson and Island Austin.

Season 1’s original calls wanted 9-to-12-year-olds, and the Atreus part was reportedly listed as a one-year series regular from the start, pointing to a planned time jump into the Ragnarök era for Season 2 rather than a firing.

Either way, the math is the same: the father-and-son duo Amazon introduced in February won’t be the duo that finishes this story. Variety confirms Vinson remains attached for Season 1.

What We Know About the God of War Series

Prime Video’s God of War follows Kratos and Atreus as they journey to spread the ashes of Faye, with Kratos working to make his son a better god while Atreus pulls his father toward being a better human.

Ronald D. Moore is showrunner, writer, and executive producer. No release date has been announced.

The cast includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri, and Danny Woodburn as Brok.

For Bautista, God of War would be only his second series-regular gig after Season 2 of Apple’s See, and it deepens his Amazon MGM relationship following The Wrecking Crew, the My Spy movies, and the upcoming Road House 2.

Hurst deserved a better exit than this, and hopefully the recovery goes smoothly. But if the Ghost of Sparta had to change faces mid-fight, Amazon just landed the guy fans put in the role before a single frame was shot.
