The Dark Knight Rises (2012): Matthew Modine Spoiler Scene Changed?

I was out tonight getting involved with a local movie production and the topic of The Dark Knight Rises came about.

Now, we all basicaly shared the same concerns for the movie, but one part that stuck out for some was the fate of Matthew Modine’s character.

So as I take it, Modine basically built up Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s John Blake in the movie — getting him onboard with Commissioner Gordon etc.

And when it came down to it, Modine fulfilled his duty as an officer of the Gotham PD as he charged at Bane’s mercenaries.

But when it came down to sacrificing(?) Modine, some thought his death fell a tad bit flat — as the scene basically just cut away to his bullet-filled body.

Which left the audience wondering.

However, back in November at the NYC shoot, set footage aired that showed Modine getting nailed by a Tumbler (below) — after he had pushed somebody out of the way, in essence, becoming a hero.

So for whatever reason, Matthew Modine’s death was changed.

Perhaps Nolan felt as if Modine sacrificing himself didn’t fit with the way he was built up? Which was basically a weasel-type character, but still at the end, he did become a “hero.”

Interesting.

So which death would you have preferred?

The Dark Knight Rises opens in theaters July 20th, 2012 and is directed by Christopher Nolan starring Christian Bale as Batman, Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon, Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox, Michael Cain as Alfred, Juno Temple and Josh Pence as a young Ra’s al Ghul.
