MTV spoke with director Zack Snyder on Sucker Punch and managed to ask some interesting questions about Superman.
Of course, the director really couldn’t say much, as you can see below, but seemed a bit squirmish(?) when asked about the direction of his Superman being “cosmic” and about Henry Cavill’s costume.
Keep in mind, Snyder has been adamant about his take on Superman going in a different direction than the previous movies and being completely unrelated.
As we have seen in the past, Superman tended to be – pardon the pun for current comic book readers – “grounded” — as Superman was based out of the Daily Planet and Metropolis.
Snyder has also stated his Supes to be more physical and should “kick ass“; however, just whose a– is he going to kick on Earth?
Of course, the likes of Bizarro or Zod could battle the Man of Steel on his adopted home planet – but what a disaster that would make, especially if taken place within the confines of a major city. As we have seen in other movies, such as in Transformers, audiences aren’t too keen on having major battle sequences take place in a “safe zone” – like the desert – and why Michael Bay is having the third Transformers movie take place in more of a city setting.
Certainly, we might see Big Blue duke it out with the Big Bad from city to city, but we could see Superman take flight to space (Braniac!?) – allowing the number of villains Kal-El could face to be greater — while allowing for an even greater battle.
MTV also asked the director about the Superman costume and showed off costume images of George Reeves and the goofy one of Nicolas Cage.
Snyder laughed as these and said they were “Awesome.”
I think, judging just from what we have been hearing in all these Superman related interviews, Snyder’s costume might look a little, as the director stated, “kick ass.” I was a fan of the tinted version of Brandon Routh’s costume – I thought that looked good. Maybe Synder will take it even further and go darker? Doubtfully, the costume will go completely black (as seen in previous defunct Superman scripts), but more of a mix of darker red and blue colors.
