SyFy Face Off With DC Comics Introduces The Infernal Core To Justice League Dark (Images)

Matt McGloin Posted: 01/23/2013 - 02:02 COMMENT

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5192:]]Tuesday nights sees the McGloin clan huddle around the boob tube watching their favorite show on SyFy with Face Off.

This week we happened to be in for an extra special treat as the likes of Jim Lee, Dan DiDio and a bunch of DC Comics artists guest-starred as they lent a helping hand to the contestants and their ideas for a superhero make-up effect.

And it just so happens that the winning superhero gets featured in Justice League Dark #16 (on sale 1/30).

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5193:]]The DC Comics artists helped the contestants with their sketches and concept art. Our favorite of the drawings happened to be what David Finch (no surprise there) was working on (see left). However, when it comes down to it, it's only a sketch as the contestant has to take the idea and make it real. No easy task.

There were some real good heroes created and there were some real bad ones - I guess that fits right in with comics books - with the winning superhero being The Infernal Core, a being born of lava from mid-earth out to right the wrongs of those that would hurt mother nature. So The Infernal Core will be appearing in Justice League Dark #16, and I'm curious what DC is going to do with that. A cameo? Or is the character going to be fully developed?

[[wysiwyg_imageupload:5194:]]The make-up artist who created The Infernal Core won last week as well, Anthony Kosar, age 26 from Lisle, IL, and this time he didn't even get to finish completely as his chest and back pieces were stuck in the mould. He had to improvise at the last minute, and improvise he did as Face Off judge Glenn Hetrick noted the color scheme was pretty spectacular. (I wonder if the final DC Comics Justice Leage Dark version will incorporate the final design with the finished chest and back?)

Update: Take a first look at The Infernal Core from Justice League Dark.

However, The Infernal Core wasn't my choice of superhero as I felt the day belonged to -- Dick Gritty.

Dick Gritty was created by Eric Fox, age 37 of Riverside, CA; I felt he was the coolest looking character by far and the most intriguing. He's a 1940s type noir character that was left for dead by a crime syndicate and brought back from the brink of death to seek vengeance upon his attackers. He carries a cool gun, and I felt of the bunch he would have been best suited to battle along side Justice League Dark.

The judges liked Dick Gritty as well with Hetrick comparing the design to an action figure he had as a kid (most likely Pulsar).

Check out some pics below from the episode.

Face Off airs Tuesdays at 9pm ET on SyFy.
