UPDATE: Marvel confirmed Christopher Abbott as Professor Xavier at D23 along with a new X-Men movie in 2028. Meet Christopher Abbott, the MCU’s new Professor X, in our full profile, and track release date, full cast, and every rumor in our X-Men guide.
Before Marvel is supposed to take the stage at D23 on Friday, a scooper says the X-Men have found their leader.
MyTimeToShineHello posted Friday that Christopher Abbott has “officially been cast” as Professor X in the MCU’s X-Men reboot. The post cleared 15,000 views inside its first hour and was reposted by Daniel Richtman’s alt account.
File the sourcing correctly: this is a scooper claim. No trade has reported it, and Marvel has announced nothing.
“Officially” in a scooper post means the deal is done behind closed doors, not that anyone stood on a stage and said it. Still, the name and the timing both line up.
Not the first time Abbott has been mentioned
The Hollywood Reporter emptied its notebook on this search last week, reporting that Abbott and Tom Pelphrey both tested for Xavier, that Pelphrey did not get it, and that the role came down to Abbott or an unnamed dark horse.
Knight Edge Media followed with a claim that five actors read for the part in total: Abbott, Bill Skarsgard, Harris Dickinson, Pelphrey, and Will Poulter. Richtman has since said Skarsgard and Pelphrey are both out.
So the scooper is not floating a new name.
Worth remembering: the two castings Deadline broke this cycle, Kit Connor landing Cyclops and Emma Frost going to Samara Weaving, both went to actors nobody floated.

The Same Account Pushed Sweeney For Frost
Track record matters here. MyTimeToShineHello is the account behind the Sydney Sweeney Emma Frost claim that cleared 2.2 million views before the role went to Weaving.
The difference this time is the source material.
Picking Abbott off a trade’s two-name shortlist is a different bet than inventing one, and with the showcase hours away, leaks are exactly what you would expect.

A 40-Year-Old Xavier Fits The Pattern
Abbott is 40, which would make him the second-youngest Xavier on film, behind only James McAvoy in the prequels.
That tracks with every choice Marvel has made on this roster. Connor is 22. Weaving is 34. Sadie Sink is already out doing Jean Grey press. Kevin Feige is building a team meant to run a decade, and a fortysomething Xavier can lead it that long.
The resume is the interesting part. Abbott is a Tony nominee whose credits run through Girls, It Comes at Night, Possessor, Poor Things, and the title role in Wolf Man. That is an indie actor’s filmography, not a franchise face.
He has also already played a Marvel character: The Foreigner in Sony’s Kraven the Hunter. Marvel recasts actors across roles all the time, and nobody is guarding Kraven continuity.

A Girls Reunion With The Rumored Villain
Abbott spent years on HBO’s Girls opposite Adam Driver, whose rumored villain role has cycled from Magneto to Mister Sinister, with THR most recently teasing Sebastian Shaw.
If both land, the reboot’s Professor X and its lead villain got their starts on the same HBO show.
Friday could bring X-Men news
The Disney Entertainment Showcase begins tonight at the Honda Center in Anaheim, and every signal this week has pointed toward mutants.
Deadline is on record expecting to add names to its X-Men cast gallery at D23. Richtman, meanwhile, spent Monday claiming Marvel was having casting “issues” and doubting the reveal would happen on time.
Every name above lives in our X-Men casting tracker until Marvel says it out loud. If the scooper is right, that could happen before the night is over.
