Backrooms is coming home.
A24 has officially set a digital release date for Kane Parsons’ record-shattering horror hit, which will be available for digital sales and rentals on Tuesday, July 14, just 46 days after the film opened in U.S. theaters on May 29.
The film will be available through digital retailers including Fandango at Home, Prime Video, Apple TV, Google TV, and YouTube Movies & TV, with Prime Video already taking preorders at $24.99.
The date also lands a week later than first expected, as A24 had originally been eyeing a July 7 VOD debut before that date came and went without a launch.
A 46-Day Window For A24’s Biggest Movie Ever
The quick turnaround comes with Backrooms still doing business in theaters.
The film has grossed nearly $350 million worldwide, including more than $190 million in North America, making it the highest-grossing release in A24’s history, and it just overtook Brad Pitt’s F1, his biggest movie ever, at the domestic box office.
It’s also a critical hit: Backrooms holds a Certified Fresh 87% on Rotten Tomatoes from 292 reviews, with a 74% audience score.
Parsons, who created the first viral Backrooms video on YouTube at just 16 years old back in January 2022, became the youngest director ever to helm a #1 movie at the worldwide box office. Not bad for a directorial debut from a filmmaker who only turned 21 in June.
Which Cut Are You Getting At Home?
Here’s the wrinkle: the digital date arrives just 11 days after A24 put an extended version of the film back in theaters. The “Everything Must Go” edition hit theaters July 3 with new footage that has so far been exclusive to the theatrical release.
A24 has not confirmed which version lands on digital July 14, but the timing suggests the studio is keeping the extended cut as a theatrical draw while the standard cut heads home, giving fans a reason to hit theaters one more time even after the movie is available in their living rooms.
When Is Backrooms Streaming On HBO Max?
The July 14 date covers digital purchases and rentals only.
For subscription streaming, Backrooms is headed to HBO Max as part of A24’s exclusive streaming deal, and based on the studio’s typical two-month gap between digital and streaming debuts, expect the film to hit the service in the September range.
No streaming date has been announced.
No physical media date has been set yet either, though a release is presumably coming, likely including that extra footage from the extended cut.
