[[wysiwyg_imageupload:1643:]]Spoilers below if you have not seen The Avengers movie!

The film grossed over $200 million in its opening — of course you have! Right?!

Well, if you haven’t seen The Avengers movie you may not want to read any further.

Because The Avengers goes cosmic!

The mid-credit scene (spoiler video here) of The Avengers features Thanos, and now we learn the background of the Mad Titan’s inclusion.

Turns out, director Joss Whedon is a pretty big fan!

Marvel Studios President and Producer Kevin Feige told SlashFilm that Thanos was all Joss Whedon’s idea.

With that, Slashfilm then went and asked Whedon about the use of Thanos in The Avengers movie, and we learn that Whedon is not just a fan of Thanos, but Adam Warlock and of course Jim Starlin (who gets a listing in the credits) as well.

He for me is the most powerful and fascinating Marvel villain. He’s the great grand daddy of the badasses and he’s in love with death and I just think that’s so cute. For me, the greatest Avengers was THE AVENGERS annual that Jim Starlin did followed by THE THING 2 in 1 that contained the death of Adam Warlock. Those were some of the most important texts and I think underrated milestones in Marvel history and Thanos is all over that, so somebody had to be in control and had to be behind Loki’s work and I was like “It’s got to be Thanos.” And they said “Okay” and I’m like “Oh my God!”

The Avengers movie assembles May 4th, 2012 and is directed by Joss Whedon, starring Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye.
