Marvel needed exactly one day to rewrite its record book.
Per box office tracker Global Box Office, the Avengers: Doomsday trailer crossed 500 million views in its first 24 hours, making it Disney’s biggest trailer launch ever and the second biggest in history, period.
The Record Stack
Start with the Disney record. The previous champ was Deadpool & Wolverine at 365 million, and that number came with an asterisk: over 100 million of those views arrived via its Super Bowl airing. Doomsday did its 500 million organically, with no televised event doing the lifting.
The pace was absurd from the jump. The trailer crossed 300 million views in just eight hours, the second fastest any trailer has ever reached that milestone.
Then the all-timer: it passed the GTA 6 trailer’s 475 million to claim the second biggest launch in history. The only trailer still ahead of it is Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which took down GTA 6 back in April and keeps the crown.
For perspective on how fast this record climbs: Endgame‘s 289 million was the all-time record just eight years ago. And the four Doomsday character teasers had already stacked 1.02 billion combined views before this trailer existed publicly.
Marvel has yet to post official numbers. When it does, expect the victory lap.
A Three-Month-Old Trailer Just Did This
Here’s the part everyone aggregating the milestone is skipping: this isn’t even the new trailer.
Rob Liefeld confirmed Monday’s release is the exact cut Marvel screened at CinemaCon in April. Marvel’s three-month-old archive footage just outdrew the GTA 6 trailer.
And the newer trailer is still unplayed, sitting in the chamber for Saturday’s Hall H panel. Marvel set a company record with its leftovers and kept the fresh ammunition for Comic-Con.
Not bad for a movie that, per this month’s reports, the Russos were still fighting to find in the editing room.
Presales Tell The Same Story
The ticket data landed Tuesday too: Doomsday now ranks third in presales for the entire post-pandemic era, behind only Spider-Man: No Way Home and Brand New Day.
Remember the context on that number: it was achieved on premium-only inventory, with theaters holding screens for Dune: Part Three and standard-format tickets not even on sale yet. Third place on a fraction of the seats.
Notice who sits above Doomsday on both lists: Spider-Man. Brand New Day holds the trailer crown and the presale silver, and it opens in ten days on July 31. Marvel’s two horses are about to run back to back, and right now the wall-crawler is the only ceiling Doom hasn’t broken.
