Marvel is putting Avengers: Doomsday tickets on sale five months early and locking in a runtime for a movie its own directors reportedly haven’t finished finding.
Per an exclusive from The Hollywood Reporter, Disney plans to announce that domestic tickets go on sale Monday, July 20 — five months ahead of release — for Infinity Vision theaters, the studio’s new large-format branding for select Doomsday screens.
Marvel declined to comment on the report.
165 Minutes — Longer Than Infinity War
The ticketing plan comes with a runtime: 165 minutes, or two hours and 45 minutes.
That puts Doomsday above Infinity War (149 minutes) and below Endgame (181), right where you’d expect part one of a two-part finale to sit.
THR notes the cut isn’t final, but once showtimes are on sale, the runtime can only drift by minutes.
Which is the real story here: Marvel just committed to a locked structure for a film that, per last week’s reports, the Russos were still wrestling with in the editing room.
Either the edit turned a corner, or Marvel just put a public deadline on finding the movie. Nothing focuses an editing bay like tickets on sale.
Infinity Vision Is The Answer To Losing IMAX
The Infinity Vision brand exists for one reason: Warner Bros. locked up IMAX for Dune: Part Three for three weeks after both films open on December 18.
Rather than fight over leftover premium screens, Disney is inventing its own label and selling it five months out, the same playbook Universal ran when it put The Odyssey IMAX tickets on sale a full year early and turned a ticketing link into a news cycle.
Disney is also seeding the format before December: an Avengers: Endgame Encore re-release hits Infinity Vision screens September 25.
As nostalgia plays go, re-running the second-biggest movie ever made ($2.8 billion worldwide) as a dry run for your new premium format is a shrewd one.
All Roads Lead To Hall H
The timing completes the picture.
Tickets go live July 20.
Marvel’s Hall H panel — where the first trailer is expected — lands five days later on July 25, and THR notes an online trailer release seems likely alongside the sale.
You don’t sell tickets to a movie nobody has seen footage from.
Not that there’s much mystery left to protect: a shot-by-shot description of that trailer already leaked over the weekend.
