A shot-by-shot description of the Avengers: Doomsday trailer has now leaked online — and it’s explicitly described as covering a “rough version” of the cut. Here’s the full breakdown of what’s in it.
Marvel is spending north of $300 million on the biggest crossover it has ever attempted, and the people cutting it together reportedly can’t find the movie.
That’s the picture painted this week by John Campea and World of Reel’s Jordan Ruimy, whose sources independently describe an editing room in trouble.
‘A Mess’ In The Editing Room
Campea reported on his show this week that post-production on Avengers: Doomsday is not going well, that editors are struggling to assemble the film, and the Russo brothers aren’t “finding the movie in the edit.”
Per Campea’s source, everything felt great on set. The problems only surfaced once the footage hit the editing bay.
World of Reel’s Ruimy followed up with his own source — the same one who told him Marvel scrapped the Blade movie — who called Doomsday a “mess” months ago and said some at Marvel were privately questioning the December 18 date.
That source reached back out this week: the friction in the editing room is real, but the date doubts are gone. Marvel is holding December 18, Dune or no Dune.
They Rolled Cameras Without A Finished Script
None of this should surprise anyone who was paying attention during production.
Rebecca Romijn admitted mid-shoot that the script wasn’t finished. The rewrites reportedly ran into the final week of filming, and the cast wasn’t fully locked while cameras rolled. The count now sits at 60-plus roles and climbing. As of Friday, Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock is rumored to join them.
Kevin Feige’s word for all of this is “plus-ing” — daily rewrites as a feature of the Marvel process, not a bug.
Call it what it is: spin. Rewriting a $300 million tentpole every day while shooting it isn’t a creative philosophy. It’s a rescue operation with good PR.
And the directors running it are the Russo brothers, who haven’t made a well-received movie since Endgame, as Cherry, The Gray Man, and The Electric State are the résumé between then and now.
The edit was always where the bill for all of it would come due. Now it has.
Marvel is banking heavily on Robert Downey Jr.’s turn as Doctor Doom to anchor the massive crossover, which makes the reported struggle to assemble the film in the edit all the more notable.
Hall H Is Big One
Here’s the crunch: Marvel has Hall H locked for Saturday, July 25, where the first Doomsday trailer is expected, meaning the studio is cutting its biggest marketing weapon out of an edit its own directors reportedly haven’t cracked.
It’s doing that with no IMAX screens in December — Dune: Part Three grabbed those months ago — and with the full plot outline already online, validated by Campea himself at the start of the month.
Which is worth pausing on: Campea is now two-for-two on Doomsday intel in July. He vouched for the plot leak on July 1, and the teaser-wave beats backed him up. His editing-room report deserves the same weight.
Marvel can’t sell mystery; the leak killed that. After this week, it can’t sell “trust the process” either. All that’s left to sell is the footage, and the first public cut of it arrives in two weeks.
The date will hold. Whether the movie is ready on that date is the question Marvel just made a lot harder to dodge.
