The Avengers: Doomsday editing room may have a problem money can’t fix: egos.
The claim comes out of Wednesday’s Nerdrotic Nooner, the same episode where host Gary “Nerdrotic” Buechler and Film Threat’s Chris Gore told the story of an alleged Ant-Man: Quantumania set fight said to be why Evangeline Lilly’s Wasp is done at Marvel.
A clip of the exchange has already pulled north of 140,000 views on X.
As with the Ant-Man story, none of this is confirmed, so file it as rumor. But one piece of it now lines up with the official record to the minute.
‘The Script As Written Is 3 Hours 15 Minutes’
The conversation turned to Avengers: Doomsday, which as reported here is said to be a mess in the editing room, with the Russos struggling to find the movie.
Gore said he has since heard a revision to that: the movie is not so much broken as it is simply too big, and the cutting is about hitting a runtime.
The source both men pointed to is Robert Meyer Burnett, the filmmaker and podcaster who backed the leaked Doomsday plot outline on air alongside John Campea earlier this month.
As laid out on the Nooner, Burnett read the script, and the script as written runs 3 hours and 15 minutes, with the runtime target set at 2 hours and 45 minutes.
Here is where the rumor meets the record: Marvel officially locked the runtime at 165 minutes when tickets went on sale Monday. That is 2 hours and 45 minutes on the nose.
Which means, if Burnett’s numbers are right, roughly half an hour of script is gone, and per the show, it is coming out of the front of the movie: the character material that establishes everyone and makes you care, CliffsNotes-ed away to make the number.
The comparison made on the show is the rushed opening of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which famously cut John Malkovich out of the finished film entirely, along with, per the show, a whole action sequence at the top.
‘Egos Take Over To The Detriment Of The Franchise’
Then came the addendum: egos.
As it was put on the show, nobody who signed on to the original MCU was a star at the time. Robert Downey Jr. was considered washed up, Chris Evans was not a star, and neither were Mark Ruffalo or Chris Hemsworth.
They were solid actors at various stages of their careers. Now, with the biggest crossover Marvel has ever assembled sitting in the edit, they have big egos, and there are too many cooks.
“What about that one scene? I said that great line. You’re cutting that out?” is how the fighting was characterized, with actors allegedly lobbying for their moments while the Russos carve half an hour out of the picture.
“When any franchise exists on a long enough timeline with the same actors and talent, egos take over to the detriment of the franchise,” Gore said.
None of it slows the machine down. Kevin Feige has already admitted the December date exists because the movie could not be finished for May, the official trailer is out, tickets are on sale, and Marvel takes over Hall H on Saturday, where a newer cut of the footage is expected.
