Paramount+ made it official on Tuesday: Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender premieres globally on the streamer on Saturday, July 25 — smack in the middle of San Diego Comic-Con weekend — with the first official trailer now online, months after the entire movie leaked onto the internet.
The announcement confirms the film’s demotion from theatrical event to streaming title, as Paramount scrapped the movie’s planned theatrical release earlier this year.
The rollout has been a disaster from the jump: the full film leaked online ahead of release, fans ripped the celebrity-heavy voice cast based on the leaked footage, and the mess eventually led to an arrest in Singapore in connection with the leak.
Based on the animated series created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the film — previously titled The Legend of Aang — follows an older Aang, the world’s last Airbender, who “learns of an ancient power that could save his culture from extinction.
With the help of his friends, he embarks on a global quest to find it before it falls into the wrong hands and threatens to upend the peace they sacrificed everything to achieve.”
Eric Nam voices Aang, with Dave Bautista as new villain Tagah. Jessica Matten (Katara), Román Zaragoza (Sokka), Steven Yeun (Zuko), and Dionne Quan (Toph) fill out Team Avatar, alongside Freida Pinto, Ke Huy Quan, Taika Waititi, Geraldine Viswanathan, Ronny Chieng, and Ken Jeong. Dee Bradley Baker — the lone holdover from the original series’ voice cast — returns as Appa and Momo.
Franchise veteran Lauren Montgomery (Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, Voltron: Legendary Defender) directs, with Steve Ahn and William Mata co-directing, from a screenplay by original series writer Tim Hedrick and Christopher Yost.

Paramount takes Aang to Hall H
Paramount+ is throwing its full Comic-Con weight behind the film, with a Hall H panel on Thursday, July 23 (1:00-2:00 p.m.) featuring the voice cast and creative team, promising “exclusive sneak peeks” and a look at “what’s next in the Avatar universe” — a sign Avatar Studios’ larger slate survived the theatrical bailout.
That’s followed by what Paramount is billing as an “exclusive” fan screening on Friday, July 24 in Ballroom 20 (7:00-9:20 p.m.), exactly one day before the movie streams worldwide to anyone with a Paramount+ login, and months after the whole thing hit pirate sites.
Fans on the convention floor can also hit Paramount+’s Press Play Arcade at Booth #3529 (July 22-26), which includes an Avatar “Cabbage Cart Madness” arcade game.
No box office to bomb
The streaming move comes with one built-in perk for Paramount: no opening weekend numbers to report.
