Fans have not only one Avatar sequel to look forward to, but James Cameron has let it be known that there will be a total of three sequels to the highest grossing film of all time.

Production for Avatar 2, 3, and 4 will begin next year as Cameron shoots all three movie simultaneously for December 2016, 2017 and 2018 release dates.

It’s also learned that James Cameron has brought on board new writers for the Avatar movies with Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver, and Shane Salerno.

Josh Friedman’s credits include the Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, The Black Dahlia, War of the Worlds, and is also executive producer on the Lock & Key movie, which is created by Stephen King’s son, Joe Hill.

Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver wrote Rise of the Planet of the Apes for Fox; Shane Slaerno wrote Armageddon and previously collaborated with Cameron on Fantastic Voyage.

James Cameron released the following statement about the new team of Avatar writers:

“Building upon the world we created with Avatar has been a rare and incredibly rewarding experience. In writing the new films, I’ve come to realize that Avatar’s world, story and characters have become even richer than I anticipated, and it became apparent that two films would not be enough to capture everything I wanted to put on screen. And to help me continue to expand this universe, I’m pleased to bring aboard Amanda, Rick, Shane and Josh — all writers I’ve long admired – to join me in completing the films screenplays.”

20th Century Fox chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos also added:

“We at the studio have no higher priority, and can feel no greater joy, than enabling Jim to continue and expand his vision of the world ofAvatar. The growing breadth and scale of Jim Cameron’s plans for his magnificent fantasy worlds continue to amaze us all.”

Avatar grossed $2.5 billion at the box office and is also the #1 selling Blu-Ray of all time. It’s also thought that Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthinton will be back to reprise their characters.
