Another Deleted Scene From The Dark Knight Rises Surfaces: This Time Bane’s Origin

By my count this is the third deleted scene from The Dark Knight Rises that has become known.

There is the one with Marion Cotillard and Morgan Freeman, and then there is the change in death with Matthew Modine.

The latest is in regards to Bane’s origin.

If you remember back in January an image of Tom Hardy with a scar on his neck surfaced (right), which we speculated might be a post-venom Bane (explaining why Bane in the movie wasn’t his muscular comic book version).

Now the exact details have become known by The Dark Knight Rises costume designer Lindy Hemming in an interview with GQ.

Note: Hemming hasn’t yet seen the movie, thought the scene was included, and was surprised when told it wasn’t.

GQ: What!? You haven’t seen the movie yet?
Lindy Hemming: It’s not out in England yet, but the other thing that you should have seen during that sequence is him being injured in his youth. So one of the fundamental things about his costume is that he has this scar from the back injury. Even if he hasn’t got the bulletproof vest on, he still has to wear the waist belt and the braces. In that scene in the prison, where he’s learning to fight the same way Batman learned to fight, he’s wearing an early version of his waist belt. It’s showing support, but it’s not the finished one he eventually wears. He’s also wearing an early version of his gas mask, all glued together.

GQ: I remember one scene where we see his face covered in bandages, is this what you’re referring to?
Lindy Hemming: Well, if you look at the film, unless they’ve cut it—and I’m sure they haven’t—there’s a whole early section for Tom Hardy where he’s fighting and being taunted by people. He’s got chains on him, and he’s standing on a wooden thing while people are attacking him. And in that scene, he’s wearing a much more ragged, primitive version of the mask.

GQ: I think that Bane scene must’ve been cut…
Lindy Hemming: Well that’s an awful shame, but I suppose you have to cut things. I won’t elaborate on it too much, because it isn’t in the film, but there was another section that showed you why he had the mask and where it came from.

It’s pretty cool what she says about Bane learning how to train the same way as Batman, meaning I take it, by the League of Shadows. That’s one thing that confused me on my first viewing — that Bane was even in the League of Shadows, as I thought Ra’s al Ghul deemed Bane too unworthy when they first descended into the prison.

Regarding what Hemming says about showing the new version of the mask, I guess that wasn’t really necessary as we can just speculate he got an improved version.

Now will Christopher Nolan include extra bonus footage on the Blu-Ray? What’s interesting is that it was said – that Nolan denied – that the rough-cut was four hours long, but extra footage seems doubtful as the previous two, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight did not feature any new content.

The Dark Knight Rises opens in theaters July 20th, 2012 and is directed by Christopher Nolan starring Christian Bale as Batman, Tom Hardy as Bane, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon, Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox, Michael Cain as Alfred, Juno Temple and Josh Pence as a young Ra’s al Ghul.
